The new fronds of Cycas revoluta. Cycads (Cycadophyta) have been around since at least the early Permian period (280mya) and have changed little over that time. Fossils closely resemble living plants today. Cycads were among the first colonizers of the terrestrial habitats of Pangea (300-200mya). Currently there are about 305 described species distributed throughout the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
